What Prescription Medications are Available to Treat Toe Nail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a chronic condition that is difficult to completely get rid of. The chronic nature of Onychomycosis suggests that any medication or treatment plan used may not be completely effective when used.

These drugs are by far the most popular prescribed meds for treating nail fungus. They've often been claimed to cure about 7 or 8 out of 10 people with 1 course of the medications. Of course, the treatment length is based on your doctors best judgment. Further, of the 3, only itraconazole and terbinafine are considered the most effective to treat toenail fungus conditions.

Doctors also prescribe Fluconazole that uses a marketing name of Diflucan.
This fungal prescription is by far the most expensive.
Cost: DIFLUCAN 100MG TABLETS $126.99 for 12! Ouch!

There's also a newer prescribed anti fungal that's topical called Ciclopirox or Penlac.
COST: PENLAC 8% TOPICAL SOLN 6.6ML $167.99
Penlac is similar to a nail polish that you apply daily to infected nails then clean off periodically. There's not enough data to suggest it is better than the other fungal prescription options.

So there you have it. Prescription drug treatment usually runs about 3 months but can go as longer as necessary. While the problem may be cured, it will take significantly longer for new nail material to replace the old, infected toenail or fingernail material. This re-growth can take anywhere from 6 months to a year or longer.

Considering the expense and risk of side effects from oral antifungals you may be interested in trying some of the more natural toenail fungus cures and remedies that have been around for decades. Just remember that toenail fungus is a chronic problem and consistent use of any treatment is needed to be effective.
